Dr. Pradeep Ramoutar, B.Sc., M.B.B.S., M.F.F.P., F.R.C.O.G., C.C.T ( O & G) Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist/ Gynaecological Surgeon

Dr. Ramoutar was born in the carnival capital of the world, Trinidad and Tobago, where he initially considered a career in Physics. Yes, this very warm, entirely professional, caring doctor actually wanted to pursue a career in Theoretical Physics.

Dr. Ramoutar first did a degree in Physics, but deep down, he was also passionate about medicine. So he pursued his undergrad medical studies (M.B.B.S.) at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, West Indies. It was during his medical school days that he decided to pursue a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was fascinated by women’s physiology and the process of pregnancy and childbirth. He started his specialist training at Mount Hope Women’s Hospital in Trinidad. He then proceeded to the United Kingdom, where he continued his postgraduate studies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University College Hospital, London (U.C.L.H.) This, however, was after he worked for a few years in the profession in his home country, Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr. Ramoutar obtained his postgraduate M.R.C.O.G. qualification from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and D.M.F.F.P. (Member Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care) from the R.C.O.G. This postgraduate qualification entitled him to pursue subspecialist training in various fields, which he did in several U.K. hospitals. He was awarded the U.K. Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training from the Postgraduate Medical Education Board of the U.K. (P.M.E.T.B.). After several years of work in the field, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In addition, Dr. Ramoutar possesses skill certifications in colposcopy (for detection and treatment of early cervical cancer) and Obstetric Leadership on the Labour Ward. With almost 20 years of training and work experience in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecologic surgery in the U.K., the last three years (before joining the Eureka team) were spent as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with Nottingham University Hospital N.H.S. Trust, Queen’s Medical Center. It is fair to say that Dr. Ramoutar is very experienced in his field.

With all his exposure and qualifications coupled with needing a change, Dr. Ramoutar joined the Eureka Medical Clinic and Bougainvillea Clinic teams in 2010 as the consultant obstetrician, gynaecologist, and gynaecological surgeon. He decided to return to the Caribbean, where he is familiar with the people’s lifestyle, mentality, and culture.

Dr. Ramoutar has found private practice to be quite fulfilling and satisfying but not as challenging as times spent in the United Kingdom, where he had to be at work for 72 hours continuously in charge of large labour wards. For obvious reasons, this practice has now been stopped by law, and each doctor is now recommended to work regular shifts.

In his many years of medicine, Dr. Ramoutar’s lowest points, even with the best technology and medical intervention, are situations that have adverse outcomes. He also has concerns regarding the increase of infertility due to infections and women delaying childbearing until very late in life.

He is also concerned (from his experience) that pregnancy cases (in an ideal world) should receive more support not only from their families but also from the corporate world. Pregnancy is such a delicate, taxing, and physically demanding experience that greater consideration and compassion should be afforded to women to make the process more manageable. However, he is quite pleased that with information, women are now taking better care of themselves. Women are becoming more aware and educated about their bodies. In his opinion, this has led to a reduction in diseases such as cervical cancer. Dr. Ramoutar would, however, like to encourage women to take more advantage of preventative gynaecological healthcare opportunities such as yearly pap smears, mammograms, and general yearly checkups. Should there be a medical condition that could deteriorate, it can be caught early and lead to positive outcomes. He would also love for couples to plan pregnancies, and while engaging in such plans, they should seek to see the gynaecologist for preconceptional care.

In an effort to assist in the reduction of teenage pregnancies, Dr. Ramoutar would also like to encourage mothers to engage their teenage daughters in what is termed “Adolescent Gynaecology” where a medical relationship with their daughters and the gynaecologist is started early so that a conversation regarding their healthcare and other delicate matters can be discussed. Also, at the end of the reproductive age group, menopause can pose particular problems, which can be alleviated by gynaecological intervention.

Dr. Ramoutar also offers other services which include but is not limited to well-woman checkups, cervical and breast cancer screening (colposcopy and cervical surgery), family planning and contraception, infertility evaluation and treatment, management of ectopic pregnancy, management of pregnancy, and a complete range of gynaecologic surgeries such as D&Cs, hysterectomy, ovarian surgery, diagnostic laparoscopy, and therapeutic laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Ramoutar, who has not physically seen his family since December 2019 due to Covid-19 restrictions in the U.K., loves to spend time reading, running, listening to classical music, and periodically playing golf in St. Thomas, but this is not currently an option.
