‘To keep the body in good health is a duty. Otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear’ The Buddha

Our lifestyle has a direct impact on our physical and mental health. Everything we do, our positive thinking, our emotions and beliefs all contribute to a healthy body and mind, resulting in a state of wellbeing.

Our environment leaves lasting effects on our lives. For instance, the devastation left by Hurricanes Irma and Maria is still present in our collective memory. During this time of the year, many hours are spent checking the weather reports from different sources to ensure that no information is missed or wrongly interpreted. For our peace of mind, we strive to ensure that all preparations are completed well before any impending bad weather.

Although it may be easier for adults to overcome some of these issues, the younger generation is even more affected by the weather during this time of the year. As responsible adults we need to be aware of the effects that these adverse weather conditions may have on our mental health. It has been suggested that meditative practices may assist in coping with the emotional impact that these devastating weather conditions bring.

Taking charge of your physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health is an individual’s responsibility. Hippocrates, the ancient philosopher reminds us that ‘our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food.’ Although we understand the benefits of a healthy diet that will provide prime fuel for the body, inclusive of supplements and antioxidants, we often forego healthy eating for fast foods which are often filled with sugar and unhealthy fats.

Thomas Edison predicted that current and future research in food technology indicate that the doctor of the future may well cure human illness and prevent disease such as cancer and other devastating illnesses with nutrition rather than drugs. Therefore feeding your body with nutritious food may be considered a necessity. Voltaire reminds us that happiness is good for our health, while Albert Einstein suggests that life is like a bicycle – to maintain your balance you must keep moving. To maintain your wellbeing your body, mind and spirit must be in perfect harmony. It has been suggested that even ten minutes of mindfulness can improve mental health.
