The Spirit of Giving: A Year-Round Commitment

Share

On a cloudy evening, Ebenezer Scrooge had one person’s interest in mind: himself. It wasn’t until he was confronted by the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, that he realized the transformative power of giving and sharing. While this story is often tied to the holiday season, its core message extends far beyond a single day or celebration. The spirit of giving, as demonstrated by Scrooge’s awakening, is a timeless reminder of the importance of community and generosity—values that the Lions Club of Tortola exemplifies year-round.

For more than 45 years, the Lions Club of Tortola has been a beacon of service and support for the Virgin Islands community. Their efforts, while highlighted during the holiday season, are rooted in a continuous commitment to improving lives and fostering a culture of care. Lion Amorrell Newton, President of the Lions Club of Tortola, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Life and Style Magazine to discuss how the club embodies the spirit of giving not just during the holidays, but every day.

The Evolution of a Legacy

The Lions Club’s giving initiatives began in the 1980s with a simple yet impactful event: the lighting of a Christmas tree in Sir Olva George’s Plaza, accompanied by gifts and treats for local children. “It was originally a Century Plant (cactus tree) fetched from up in the hills and brought into town and decorated,” President Newton shared. Over time, the programme evolved to meet the growing needs of the community, adapting to logistical challenges and expanding its reach.

“We separated our activities into different initiatives to better serve the community,” President Newton explained. This adaptability ensured that the Lions Club could continue their mission despite challenges, proving that resilience and creativity are key to sustaining impactful service.

Beyond the Holidays

Today, the Lions Club’s initiatives include food baskets for families in need, toy drives for children, and community celebrations that bring people together. While these efforts gain attention during the holiday season, their essence—compassion and generosity—is carried forward into the new year.

The food basket initiative is a cornerstone of the Club’s giving. In 2023, they distributed 155 food baskets to families across Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. “It’s not just about providing food; it’s about ensuring dignity and inclusion,” President Newton explained. The Club also offers vouchers to families with specific dietary needs, empowering them to choose items that suit their preferences.

Similarly, the toy drive reaches hundreds of children annually, fostering joy and creating lasting memories. “In 2023, we distributed 800 toys to children across the islands,” President Newton shared. “It’s a small gesture that has a big impact on their happiness and sense of belonging.”

Creating Ripples of Change

The Lions Club’s work is a testament to how collective efforts can create meaningful change. Through partnerships with local businesses, schools, and social organizations, the Club amplifies its reach and ensures that no one is left behind.

“One story that stays with me is of an elderly man who received a care package last year,” President Newton recalled. “He told us it was the first gift he’d received in decades. Moments like that remind us why we do what we do.”

How You Can Help

As we move into the new year, the Lions Club invites everyone to be part of their mission. “Volunteers are the heart of our efforts,” President Newton said. “Whether it’s donating, participating in our events, or simply spreading the word, every action makes a difference.”

Local businesses are encouraged to set up donation boxes or sponsor initiatives, fostering a culture of giving within the workplace. Community members can also identify areas of need and collaborate with the Club to address them.

Looking Ahead

The Lions Club of Tortola’s vision for the future is clear: to continue building a community where generosity and kindness thrive. With initiatives that go beyond seasonal giving, they exemplify the enduring power of service and compassion.

As we reflect on the past year and set intentions for the one ahead, let us all embrace the spirit of giving in our own ways. Together, we can create a brighter, more connected community.

The Lions Club of Tortola wishes everyone a joyful and fulfilling New Year!
