The Royal Visit – After Irma

The day dawned a dull shade of bright with intermittent downpours of rain.

The date was Saturday 18th November 2017, the day that will be officially documented as the first visit of His Royal Highness Prince Charles to the British Virgin Islands.

He had come to witness the devastation and see the recovery process on the largest island in the Territory-Tortola, which had been severely dealt with by the passage of the category five hurricane, on September 6, 2017.

Hurricane Irma had severely damaged many islands in the northern Caribbean including the British Virgin Islands where it smashed the islands’ infrastructure, claimed livelihoods and left a total of four dead.

His Royal Highness made site visits to the Youth Empowerment Center (YEP), the BVI Red Cross, and the Elmore Stoutt High School, the largest public secondary school in the Territory which was completely destroyed.

He then met with the Premier of the Virgin Islands,Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith, Ministers of Government, Permanent Secretaries, Government employees, school children, service clubs, as well as members of the public at the Queen Elizabeth ІІ Park in Road Town.

There was a cultural presentation by the Heritage Dancers and refreshments followed for the hundreds who had braved the inclement weather to get a close-up look of the eldest son of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second.

The Prince also visited other islands that were affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria such as Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda on his brief tour.
